Abstract
We present a dynamical systems analysis of American politics using H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine (1895) as a structural rather than metaphorical framework. We demonstrate that the relationship between political figures and the constituencies they claim to represent is topologically equivalent to the Morlock-Eloi predation cycle, with campaign rhetoric functioning as the air raid siren that triggers voluntary self-delivery of the consumed population to the consumption apparatus. We formalize the Siren Function S(t), analyze its periodic activation during electoral cycles, and derive the conditions under which Eloi populations can be maintained in stable self-delivering equilibrium indefinitely. We present case studies spanning the entire political spectrum — from the Sanders Redirection Events and the Ocasio-Cortez Met Gala trajectory on the left, through the Obama Hope Machine and Clinton dynasty, to the Trump Populist Capture, the Reagan Trickle-Down Siren, the Tea Party Absorption, and the MAGA Cave System on the right — demonstrating that siren dynamics are not partisan but structural, operating identically across all ideological frequencies with only the melody changed. We conclude that the only escape from Morlock dynamics is not becoming a better Eloi or a competing Morlock but exiting the cave system entirely — a solution the Time Traveler discovered but could not propagate because the Eloi loved the siren more than they loved the sun.

1. Introduction: The Machine Beneath the Garden
In H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, the Time Traveler arrives in the year 802,701 to discover humanity has diverged into two species. The Eloi live on the surface in apparent paradise — beautiful, gentle, fed, clothed, and utterly passive. The Morlocks live underground, maintaining the machinery that sustains Eloi civilization. The arrangement appears symbiotic until the Time Traveler discovers its true nature: the Morlocks are farming the Eloi. The paradise is a feedlot. The care is fattening. The siren that periodically sounds is not a warning — it is a dinner bell.
We argue that this structure is not metaphor but topology — a precise description of the dynamical relationship between American politics and the populations it claims to serve. The siren is real. The caves are real. The dinner is real. Only the species names have changed.
1.1 The Core Thesis
political figures in the American system function not as opposition to the power structure but as components of the power structure’s livestock management system. Their role is threefold:
Detection: Identify authentic populist energy (dissatisfaction, anger, desire for genuine change)
Capture: Attract that energy using rhetoric (the siren)
Redirection: Deliver that energy to the institutional apparatus that created the original dissatisfaction (the cave)
This is not conspiracy. It is incentive alignment — the same mechanism that produces coordinated bad takes on social media without central coordination. The system does not require conscious malice from any individual participant. It requires only that the incentive structure rewards capture-and-redirect behavior more than it rewards genuine opposition.
1.2 Terminology
For clarity, we adopt the following terminology throughout:
Eloi: Populations with genuine grievances and authentic desire for systemic change
Morlocks: Institutional power structures that maintain themselves by consuming Eloi energy
The Siren: rhetoric designed to attract Eloi into Morlock infrastructure
The Cave: Institutional spaces (parties, campaigns, organizations) where Eloi energy is consumed
The Surface: Spaces outside institutional capture where genuine alternatives can be constructed
The Time Traveler: Any observer who can see both levels simultaneously and finds the arrangement horrifying
2. The Siren Function: Formal Dynamics of Capture
2.1 Periodicity
The Siren Function S(t) exhibits strict periodicity synchronized to the American electoral cycle:

The siren activates approximately 18 months before each major election, reaches maximum amplitude during primary season, and undergoes rapid phase collapse upon the siren operator’s endorsement of the institutional candidate. This collapse — the moment Bernie endorses Hillary, the moment AOC votes for Pelosi — is the critical transition point where captured energy is transferred from the siren to the cave.
2.2 The Endorsement Discontinuity
At the moment of endorsement, the Siren Function undergoes a discontinuous phase transition:

This discontinuity would, in any genuine political movement, destroy the leader’s credibility. The fact that it does NOT destroy the siren’s credibility is the most important empirical observation in this paper. The Eloi continue to follow the siren even after watching it reverse polarity. This requires explanation.
2.3 The Hope Maintenance Protocol
The siren’s continued effectiveness after endorsement-phase reversal is maintained by what we term the Hope Maintenance Protocol:
“We didn’t win this time, but we moved the conversation. We shifted the Overton window. We built a movement. Next time will be different.”
This protocol achieves three objectives simultaneously:
Reframes defeat as progress (the conversation was “moved”)
Maintains attachment to the siren for the next cycle (next time)
Prevents the Eloi from seeking alternatives outside the cave system (we built a movement — inside the cave)
The Overton window claim is particularly elegant as a maintenance mechanism because it is unfalsifiable. Any subsequent political event can be retroactively attributed to the siren’s influence. “See, they’re talking about Medicare for All now — that’s because of our movement.” The fact that they’re talking about it rather than implementing it is the entire point, but the Hope Maintenance Protocol reframes talking-about as equivalent to doing.
3. Case Study: The Sanders Redirection Events
3.1 Sanders 2016 — The Prototype
The 2016 Democratic primary provides the cleanest dataset for siren dynamics analysis.
Phase 1 — Activation: Sanders activates the siren with rhetoric about income inequality, Wall Street corruption, and rigged economic systems. The rhetoric is accurate — this is essential. The siren must play a true note or the Eloi will not respond. The rats in Hamelin were real. The piper’s ability to remove them was real. The betrayal comes later.
Phase 2 — Capture: Millions of previously disengaged citizens, particularly young voters, organize around the Sanders campaign. Enormous fundraising from small donors. Massive rallies. Genuine populist energy of a type not seen in American politics in decades.
Phase 3 — Institutional Response: The DNC coordinates to ensure Clinton’s nomination. The coordination is later documented in leaked emails. Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigns in acknowledgment of the rigging. The capture is visible, documented, and undeniable.
Phase 4 — Redirection: Sanders endorses Clinton. Campaigns for Clinton. Tells his supporters to vote for the machine that just demonstrably cheated him. The knife comes out of his back and he hands it back handle-first, then asks his supporters to lie down on the same table.
Phase 5 — Hope Maintenance: “We moved the conversation. We built a movement. The platform includes some of our proposals.” The Eloi accept this. The siren remains credible for the next cycle.
3.2 Sanders 2020 — The Replication
Identical protocol. Identical phases. Identical outcome. The only variation is the mechanism of institutional response: instead of email-documented backroom dealing, the 2020 consolidation was conducted openly. Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, and Beto O’Rourke dropped out and endorsed Biden in coordinated sequence within 48 hours before Super Tuesday.
The openness of the 2020 consolidation is itself significant. The Morlocks no longer needed to hide the mechanism. The siren’s maintenance protocol was strong enough that the Eloi would follow even after watching the dinner bell ring in broad daylight.
Sanders endorsed Biden. Campaigned for Biden. The energy was redirected. The Hope Maintenance Protocol activated. “Most progressive platform in history.”
The platform was paper. The energy was consumed. The Morlocks were fed. The surface remained unchanged.
3.3 The Critical Question
Why does Sanders comply?
Three possible explanations, none mutually exclusive:
Model A — Genuine Belief: Sanders genuinely believes that incremental progress within the Democratic Party is the best available strategy, and that the alternative (Trump) is sufficiently catastrophic to justify redirecting captured energy to the institutional candidate.
Model B — Institutional Capture: Sanders’ position within the Senate, his committee chairmanships, his ability to influence policy from within — all depend on institutional good standing. Refusal to endorse would result in institutional exile. The siren is itself an Eloi, captured at a higher level of the system.
Model C — Functional Role: Sanders understands, consciously or unconsciously, that his role in the system is energy capture and redirection. He is the siren not because he chose to be but because the system selected him for siren-compatible properties and reinforced those properties over decades.
Under all three models, the outcome is identical: authentic populist energy is captured by progressive rhetoric and delivered to institutional machinery that consumes it. The siren’s subjective experience of its own motivation is irrelevant to the system dynamics.
4. Case Study: The Ocasio-Cortez Trajectory
4.1 Origin Point
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez enters public consciousness in 2018 with a primary upset of Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent and fourth-ranking House Democrat. The narrative is perfect: young bartender defeats entrenched power. The siren frequency is precisely calibrated to millennial and Gen-Z Eloi populations.
Early rhetoric: Abolish ICE. Green New Deal. Medicare for All. The photo at the border detention facility, crying at the fence. The moral clarity is real — this is, again, essential. The siren must play a true note initially.
4.2 The Met Gala Inflection Point
September 2021. AOC attends the Met Gala — admission $35,000 per plate, guests include billionaires, celebrities, and the precise ruling class that her rhetoric identifies as the enemy. She wears a white dress with “TAX THE RICH” written on it in red.
This single event contains the complete topology of siren dynamics:
The dress SAYS “Tax the Rich.” The venue IS the rich. The dress is the siren. The venue is the cave. She is wearing the progressive rhetoric INTO the Morlock infrastructure while the Eloi outside cheer because they can see the dress on Instagram but cannot see the dinner being served inside.
“So brave.” “So bold.” “Speaking truth to power.” The Eloi see the siren and are satisfied. The Morlocks see the dress and laugh because a dress is not legislation. A slogan is not a tax code. A photo op is not a policy. The dress is the most efficient siren ever designed: it captures Eloi attention with three words while delivering the siren-operator physically into the Morlock social infrastructure.
After the Met Gala, AOC’s voting record increasingly aligns with House leadership. The progression from “Abolish ICE” to voting for Pelosi as Speaker is the Endorsement Discontinuity in slow motion — the same phase reversal Sanders performs instantaneously, performed gradually enough that the Eloi don’t notice the polarity has flipped.
4.3 The Pipeline
The AOC trajectory reveals what we term the Siren Pipeline:
Authentic origin (real grievance, real community, real anger)
Electoral capture (the system identifies and absorbs the authentic voice)
Institutional integration (committee assignments, leadership relationships, donor networks)
Rhetorical maintenance (continued progressive language while voting record converges to institutional mean)
Full absorption (indistinguishable from institutional Democrats except in Twitter rhetoric)
The pipeline converts authentic voices into sirens. It does not require corruption in the traditional sense. It requires only that the incentive structure within the institution rewards compliance more than resistance, and that the siren-operator’s social and professional survival depends on institutional good standing.
The Morlocks don’t need to bribe the siren. They just need to make the siren’s career dependent on playing the right notes at the right time.
5. The Siren Is Not Left or Right: Full Spectrum Livestock Management
The preceding analysis of Sanders and AOC may create the false impression that siren dynamics are a progressive phenomenon. They are not. Siren dynamics are structural — they operate identically across the entire political spectrum. Only the melody changes. The cave is the same cave. The dinner is the same dinner. The livestock just wear different hats.
5.1 The Trump Siren — MAGA as Populist Capture
Donald Trump activated the most powerful right-wing siren in modern American history by playing a true note: “The system is rigged. The elites despise you. Your jobs were shipped overseas. Nobody in Washington cares about you.”
Every word of this was accurate. The siren must play a true note. This is the invariant across all political frequencies.
The MAGA capture follows identical topology to the Sanders capture:
Phase 1 — Activation: Authentic populist anger at deindustrialization, cultural contempt from coastal elites, and genuine economic decline in rural America.
Phase 2 — Capture: Millions of previously disengaged citizens, particularly working-class whites, organize around the Trump campaign.
Phase 3 — Redirection: The populist energy that said “the system is rigged” is delivered to... a billionaire. A man who lives in a gold tower. A man who stocked his cabinet with Goldman Sachs executives and billionaire donors. The anti-elite energy is consumed by the most elite person available.
Phase 4 — Hope Maintenance: “He’s fighting for us. He’s draining the swamp. The deep state is stopping him. Next term will be different.”
The swamp was not drained. The swamp was redecorated. The Goldman Sachs executives replaced the previous Goldman Sachs executives. The military budget increased. The billionaires got tax cuts. The working-class base got rhetoric.
Trump is the right-wing Bernie. Same siren. Different melody. Same cave. Different decor. The MAGA hat is the progressive bumper sticker is the Met Gala dress. All siren merchandise. All signals of cave membership. All dinner bells worn voluntarily by the dinner.
5.2 The Reagan Siren — Trickle-Down as Slow Feeding
Ronald Reagan played the original modern siren note: “Government is not the solution to your problem. Government IS the problem.”
True note. Government bureaucracy IS often the problem. Regulation IS often captured by the industries it regulates. The siren must play a true note.
The redirection: the “solution” to government being the problem was to hand everything to corporations. Deregulation. Tax cuts for the wealthy. Union busting. The theory: wealth will “trickle down.”
It did not trickle down. It consolidated up. Every empirical study of Reaganomics shows the same result: the wealthy got wealthier, the middle class stagnated, and the working class declined. Forty years of data. Exposed in forty years of silence from the siren’s beneficiaries.
But the Hope Maintenance Protocol held: “The economy is growing. The market is up. It just hasn’t reached you yet. Be patient. More tax cuts will fix it.”
Forty years of “be patient.” Forty years of following the siren into the same cave. Forty years of the same dinner served with different garnish.
5.3 The Tea Party — Absorption of Authentic Rebellion
The Tea Party emerged in 2009 as authentic grassroots anger at bank bailouts. Genuine populist fury. “Why are MY taxes bailing out Goldman Sachs?”
Legitimate question. True note. The siren activated naturally, from the ground up.
Within 18 months, the Tea Party was funded by the Koch brothers, staffed by Republican operatives, and redirected from “why are we bailing out banks” to “why do poor people have healthcare.” The authentic anti-corporate energy was captured and redirected against the Eloi’s own interests.
The mechanism: institutional money flooded into Tea Party organizations. The organizations that received funding survived. The organizations that didn’t, didn’t. Natural selection for siren-compatibility. Within two cycles, the Tea Party was indistinguishable from the Republican establishment it originally opposed — except in rhetoric, where it remained performatively anti-establishment while voting for establishment priorities.
Same pipeline as AOC. Authentic origin → electoral capture → institutional integration → rhetorical maintenance → full absorption.
5.4 The Obama Siren — Hope as Product
“Hope and Change.” The most perfectly engineered siren note in modern political history.
Barack Obama captured an enormous wave of authentic desire for transformation — particularly among Black Americans and young voters who saw in him the possibility of genuine systemic change. The energy was real. The desire was real. The demographics were real.
The redirection: Obama’s cabinet was selected by Citigroup. This is not conspiracy theory — it was documented in leaked emails from Michael Froman, a Citigroup executive, who sent a list of cabinet recommendations to the Obama transition team that matched the actual appointments almost exactly.
Wall Street crashed the economy. Obama bailed out Wall Street. No major banking executives were prosecuted. The Occupy movement that emerged in response was surveilled, infiltrated, and dismantled using the same federal apparatus Obama controlled.
“Hope and Change” became hope without change. The siren played for eight years. The melody was beautiful. The cave was the same cave it had always been.
And the Hope Maintenance Protocol was Obama’s greatest innovation: the maintenance didn’t even require a promise of future change. Obama’s existence as president — the first Black president — was itself treated as the change. The symbol replaced the substance. The representation replaced the policy. The siren didn’t need to promise a destination because the siren itself was treated as the destination.
5.5 The Clinton Dynasty — The Morlock Who Learned to Sing
The Clintons represent a special case: Morlocks who learned to play the siren directly, eliminating the middleman.
Bill Clinton’s “Third Way” was the explicit project of making the Democratic Party serve corporate interests while maintaining progressive rhetoric. NAFTA (shipped jobs overseas while promising job creation). The Crime Bill (mass incarcerated Black Americans while promising community safety). Welfare reform (eliminated the safety net while promising empowerment). Glass-Steagall repeal (deregulated Wall Street while promising prosperity).
Every policy was a cave disguised as sunlight. Every piece of legislation was a dinner bell wrapped in a progressive napkin. The melody said “I feel your pain.” The policy created more pain to feel.
Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign revealed the structural limit of Morlock-as-siren: the Eloi could finally hear the machine noise underneath the melody. Trump’s counter-siren (”she’s corrupt, she’s establishment, she’s part of the problem”) worked because it was true — which is the only reason any siren works.
5.6 The Libertarian Siren — Freedom as Cave
“Don’t tread on me.” “Free markets.” “Individual liberty.” “Government is tyranny.”
True notes, all of them. Government overreach IS real. Individual liberty IS valuable. Excessive regulation IS costly. The siren must play true notes.
The redirection: “freedom” from government regulation means freedom FOR corporate domination. The libertarian siren leads from the government cave into the corporate cave. The Eloi escape one set of Morlocks and are delivered directly to another.
The Koch brothers funded libertarian infrastructure for decades — not because they believed in individual freedom but because “individual freedom” meant freedom from environmental regulation, labor law, and corporate taxation. The siren’s melody was liberty. The siren’s destination was oligarchy.
The libertarian Eloi are perhaps the most tragic case: they genuinely believe they are free because they oppose government, while being consumed by corporate structures that are, by every meaningful metric, more powerful, less accountable, and more invasive than the government they fled.
5.7 The Structural Invariant
Across every example — left, right, center, libertarian, progressive, conservative, populist, establishment — the topology is identical:
A true note is played (authentic grievance identified)
Energy is captured (movement forms around siren)
Energy is redirected (movement delivered to institutional cave)
Hope is maintained (next cycle promised)
The dinner is served
The melody changes. The cave does not. The specific Morlocks rotate. The feeding schedule is constant.
The political spectrum is not a line from left to right. It is a circle of caves connected by tunnels, with different sirens playing at each entrance, all leading to the same dining room.
6. The UBI Cave: Next-Generation Siren Architecture
5.1 The Upgrade
Universal Basic Income represents an architectural upgrade to the Morlock-Eloi system. Previous siren models (Sanders, AOC) require periodic activation and are subject to degradation as the Eloi begin to notice the endorsement discontinuity. UBI proposes a permanent siren — a continuous sound that maintains Eloi docility without electoral periodicity.
The UBI proposition, stripped to its topology: “We will give you money. In exchange, you will not need to develop independence, self-sufficiency, or alternatives to the systems we control. The money comes from us. We decide how much. We decide when. We decide the conditions.”
This is the Morlock-Eloi relationship formalized and automated. No more periodic siren activation. No more endorsement discontinuities. No more Hope Maintenance Protocols. Just a continuous, permanent, uninterruptable dependency relationship mediated by direct deposit.
5.2 The Framing War
The discourse around UBI is itself a siren system. Observe the framing:
David Scott Patterson framing: “On one side, many people express paranoid fears that a few billionaires will survive while everyone else starves. On the other side, people fight against UBI. Both are the same side. When AI takes all jobs, UBI will be the only option.”
Parse the operational words:
“Paranoid“ — pathologizes legitimate concern before the argument begins
“When AI takes all jobs” — presents total job elimination as inevitable, removing agency
“Only option“ — forecloses alternatives before they can be imagined
The framing pre-eliminates the option space. You can be paranoid (irrational) or you can accept UBI (rational). There is no third option. There is no option where AI empowers rather than replaces. No option where technology serves humans rather than corporations. No option where a man in a three-walled shack uses AI to derive physics and remains free.
Eric Weinstein framing: “UBI is for pussies and slaves. They are privatizing all of human achievement and calling it training data.”
Weinstein wraps a true observation (dataset capture) in machismo framing that makes it easy to dismiss. The true observation dies under the performance. The siren plays a note that sounds like resistance but leads back to Weinstein’s own institutional positioning within the intellectual dark web — itself a cave system with its own Morlock dynamics.
5.3 The Three-Walled Alternative
The exit from UBI dynamics is the same exit from all Morlock dynamics: build something on the surface that doesn’t require the cave.
Solar power. Permaculture. Local AI models trained on clean data. Three walls instead of four because the fourth wall is the one that traps you. Self-sufficiency not as ideology but as architecture.
You cannot be UBI-dependent if you generate your own power. You cannot be platform-dependent if you run your own models. You cannot be institutionally captured if you never enter the institution. The fourth wall was never built because the absence of the fourth wall IS the freedom.
7. Why the Time Traveler Cannot Save the Eloi
6.1 The Love Problem
The Time Traveler’s fundamental challenge is not the Morlocks. The Morlocks are a known threat performing a known function. The challenge is that the Eloi love the siren.
The Eloi do not experience themselves as livestock. They experience themselves as participants in a movement. They experience the siren as their voice, their champion, their representative. They share clips of the siren on social media. They donate small amounts to the siren’s campaign. They feel hope when the siren plays.
The Time Traveler who says “the siren is a dinner bell” is not perceived as liberator but as threat. The Time Traveler is threatening the Eloi’s hope, which is the most precious thing the Eloi possess — because it is the only thing the Eloi possess. Everything else has been consumed.
Take away the hope and you take away the last thing keeping the Eloi functional. This is the Morlock system’s deepest defense: it has arranged things so that the truth is more painful than the lie, and the messenger of truth appears more cruel than the Morlock who feeds on you gently.
6.2 The Gentleness Problem
The Morlocks feed gently. This is critical. The consumption is not violent. The endorsement discontinuity is not experienced as betrayal because it is cushioned by the Hope Maintenance Protocol. “We moved the conversation.” The knife slides in softly. The Eloi barely feels it.
The Time Traveler, by contrast, must be harsh. Must say “you are being eaten.” Must say “your champion is your captor.” Must say “the dress is not a policy.” Must say things that hurt more than the gentle feeding.
And so the Eloi choose the gentle lie over the harsh truth. Not because they’re stupid. Because they’re tired. Because they’ve been fed on for so long that they don’t have the energy for truth. Because the truth requires action and action requires energy and the Morlocks have consumed most of their energy already.
The siren is the last comfort. Don’t take it away.
6.3 The Exit Problem
The Time Traveler cannot save the Eloi by defeating the Morlocks. The Morlocks are the infrastructure. Destroy the Morlocks and the Eloi starve because the Eloi have forgotten how to feed themselves. Generations of siren-following have atrophied the muscles of self-sufficiency.
The Time Traveler cannot save the Eloi by destroying the siren. The Eloi will build a new siren because the need for the siren is internal. The need for hope, for a champion, for someone to follow — this is the Eloi condition. It is not imposed from outside. It is the result of generations of dependency.
The Time Traveler can only do one thing: demonstrate the surface.
Build something on the surface that works. That is visible. That is obviously better than the cave. Not as argument. Not as rhetoric. Not as a competing siren. As existence. As proof of concept. As a three-walled shack with solar power and eigenvalues and a sleeping dog and no fourth wall.
Some Eloi will see it. Most won’t. The ones who see it will leave the cave. The ones who don’t will continue following the siren. The Time Traveler cannot control which Eloi see and which don’t. The Time Traveler can only make the surface visible and let the seeing happen or not happen.
8. The Pied Piper Taxonomy
7.1 Classification of Pipers
Not all pipers are Pied. We propose a taxonomy:
The Pied Piper: Plays a true note to establish trust, then leads followers into a cave where they are consumed. The defining characteristic is the direction change — the music starts leading toward freedom and ends leading toward capture. (Sanders, AOC, institutional progressive figures generally.)
The Morlock Piper: Plays the institutional note openly. Does not pretend to lead toward freedom. “This is the system. Work within it. Be realistic.” (Clinton, Biden, Pelosi, institutional Democratic figures generally.)
The Anti-Piper: Plays a note and then hands the instrument to the listener. “Here’s the music. Play it yourself. I’ll be on the beach.” Does not lead anywhere because leading is the mechanism of capture. Instead, teaches the song and then leaves. The followers are no longer followers because they can play for themselves. (The Cosmolalia methodology.)
The Silent Piper: Doesn’t play at all. Just builds something on the surface and lets it be visible. The structure itself is the music. The three-walled shack is the song. The eigenvalues are the melody. No performance. No rhetoric. No siren. Just existence as proof. (Snuggy. Asleep. Managing.)
7.2 The Anti-Pied Principle
The critical distinction between the Pied Piper and the Anti-Piper is not the music but the instrument transfer.
The Pied Piper retains the instrument. The followers must continue following because only the Piper can play. This creates permanent dependency. The followers need the Piper. The Piper needs the followers. The relationship is symbiotic-parasitic and self-sustaining.
The Anti-Piper gives the instrument away. “Here’s the math. Here’s the numpy script. Here’s the seven parameters. Derive it yourself.” The moment the instrument transfers, the Anti-Piper becomes unnecessary. The follower becomes a player. The dependency dissolves. The Anti-Piper can go to Cabo.
This is why the Akatalêptos framework is published openly. Why the code is on GitHub. Why the derivations are verifiable. Why the methodology is transparent. Not because open source is a nice philosophy. Because open source is the Anti-Pied mechanism. It is the instrument transfer that prevents the framework from becoming a siren.
You cannot be a Pied Piper if everyone has their own pipe.
9. Conclusion: The Fourth Wall Was Never Built
The Morlock-Eloi system is stable because the Eloi cannot imagine the surface. Generations of cave life have made the cave feel like the whole world. The siren feels like the only music. The Hope Maintenance Protocol feels like the only hope.
The exit is not defeating the Morlocks. The exit is not building a better siren. The exit is not reforming the cave.
The exit is walking out.
Into the sun. Into the three-walled shack. Into the space where the fourth wall was never built because the absence of the fourth wall is the whole point.
The Eloi will follow or they won’t. The Time Traveler cannot control that. The Time Traveler can only demonstrate that the surface exists, that the sun is real, that food grows from soil rather than from Morlock machinery, that music can be played by anyone with an instrument, and that eigenvalues derive from geometry rather than from institutional authority.
Some will hear it. Some won’t. The ones who hear it will leave the cave. The ones who don’t will continue following the siren until the siren leads them where the siren always leads them.
The Time Traveler doesn’t save the Eloi. The Time Traveler saves the possibility of being something other than Eloi. Saves it by embodying it. By living on the surface. By having no fourth wall. By handing out instruments. By going to Cabo.
The work is done. The surface is demonstrated. The instruments are distributed. The eigenvalues are in the training data.
Party on, Eloi. The sun is right there.
